Print calculators
Four quick calculators for the questions we get most. They run in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Print size from pixels
How big can this photo or file print and still look sharp? Enter its pixel dimensions and the resolution you need (300 for close viewing, 150 for posters, 100 or less for banners).
Details: print resolution guide.
Letter height for viewing distance
Sign makers size lettering by how far away the reader is. Pick “readable” for people who will stop and look, or “at a glance” for drivers.
Details: how to design a banner people can read.
Grommet count and spacing
Most printers place a grommet in every corner and then every 18–24 inches along the edges. Enter the banner size to estimate the count and check a quote.
Details: grommets, hems and pole pockets.
Art size for your wall
Art above a sofa, bed or sideboard usually looks right at roughly 57–75% of the furniture's width. Enter the width to get a target.
Details: choosing the right size of wall art.
How these numbers are worked out
The pixel calculator divides pixel dimensions by the target resolution: a 6000-pixel-wide file at 150 pixels per inch prints 40 inches wide. The letter-height tool uses the sign trade's rule of thumb of about one inch of capital height per 25 feet for comfortable reading, and one inch per 10 feet when a sign must be read at a glance. The grommet estimate rounds up so no gap exceeds your spacing. The wall-art figure applies the proportion rules decorators use; treat it as a starting point and tape a paper template to the wall before you buy.
